All About Highland

Highland dancing is a highly athletic and technical form of dance that dates back to 11th-century Scotland, where it was originally a test

of strength, stamina, and precision for warriors!

Each traditional dance that dancers learn, perform, and compete in tells a story of Scottish History. Each dance is broken down into steps, of which there are many to learn and choose from! Dances are performed to Bagpipe music and dancers wear traditional garments such as the Kilt (pictured above) and the Aboyne. Dancers even complete the Sword Dance, dancing around and within two swords (set up like a plus sign)!

Dancers also have the opportunity to regularly learn choreographed solo and group dances that incorporate traditional Highland steps and steps from other dance styles into modern costuming, music, and acting!

Opportunities in Highland

Competitive Opportunity: Dancers can compete globally and year-round as they progress through five competitive levels: Primary, Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, and Premier, respectively. Once dancers reach the Premier level, they are eligible to compete for Premiership and Championship titles. Highland technique has evolved immensely, and dancers who wish to reach this level and find competitive success require focused training and practice.

Recreational Opportunity: Dancers may perform at local events, local competitions, or just attend classes for fitness, skills, friends & fun!

Although high-level competitions are largely individual on stage, dancers build strong connections as a team and have plenty of opportunities to attend competitions, perform, and collaborate!
